Commission celebrates Black history, team members

LARGO — City Commissioners here recognized February as Black History Month and celebrated the city’s newest team members of the quarter during its Feb. 3 meeting.

Black History Month was recognized through a proclamation that honors the achievements and contributions of Black and African American community members and acknowledges the importance of continuing to build an inclusive community in which all past, present, and future individuals are respected.

Special Events Coordinator Kara Piehl introduced this year’s honoree, Tiffany Brown, executive director of the Greater Ridgecrest Branch YMCA and a dedicated community leader. Brown expressed heartfelt gratitude for being recognized as this year’s honoree and thanked the city for its continued support and partnership.

The commission also recognized Largo’s newest team members of the quarter.

Human Resources Director Elissa Long presented team members with their certificates and shared their nomination stories. The following are excerpts from their nominations:

• David Drash, Engineering Services senior project manager — “David, through his own initiative, applied for funding for two capital wastewater projects, the Non-Surface Water Effluent Disposal project and the Lift Station Basin 25 Inflow and Infiltration Abatement project. Recently, the state informed the city, David’s two requests were awarded as a $19.1 million forgivable loan. …This is the largest known amount of funding the city has ever received and is expected to improve the financial status of the Wastewater Enterprise Fund.”

• Todd Nutbrown, Community Development homeless outreach specialist — “Todd goes above and beyond, leading with compassion to help our unhoused folks in our community. With limited resources available, he works daily to find the right fit for them to be placed at one of the three shelters in Pinellas County. Todd wants to be sure that where they are placed, they will have the most success. Homeless Empowerment Program (HEP) has 20 beds reserved for Largo. Todd is active in filling beds weekly. He is very strategic as this is a faster-paced program in hopes they find employment, save money, and find permanent affordable housing in 90 days.”

Manager of the quarter:

• Megan Dion, Engineering Services program engineer — “Her dedication has been especially clear in the multi-year assessment and planning work along the Seminole Boulevard corridor between Ulmerton Road and Eighth Avenue SW. Megan has expertly managed condition assessments, public engagement, and was involved in the development of a recommendations report. These efforts have prepared Largo for future construction grant funding that could transform the corridor’s safety and mobility…Her leadership in infrastructure management and cross-agency collaboration exemplifies the very best of public service.”
