A meeting to discuss the city’s comprehensive plan will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in City Council chambers at 5:01 p.m.

TAMPA, Fla. — The future of Tampa is up for discussion, as city leaders prepare to consider a plan that’s designed to shape the city for generations.

“We’re looking at by 2050, about 100,000 more people coming into Tampa,” Melissa Zornitta of Plan Hillsborough said.

Zornitta says that growth is why planning leaders have been looking at what will be best for the city over the next few decades.

“Where, and what corridors within Tampa we should be incentivizing additional growth to go on,” she said.

Zornitta says after feedback from some neighborhoods that were against development that comes with the corridors, changes have been made.

“City council removed all of the corridors south of Kennedy Boulevard from being considered for those density incentives,” she said.

Jason Reekmans is a developer in town, and says while neighbors in those areas may not be supportive of more density in the area, he believes places like East Tampa could benefit.

“More density would allow for mixed use projects,” he said. “We need that. We need spaces where there are businesses on the bottom, and residences on top.”

Reekmans has been adamant that community members need to share their thoughts on the plan to make sure Tampa’s future doesn’t price out the hardworking people who make the city run.

“You should be at this meeting, voicing your opinion, expressing how you feel about how it’s impacted your life,” he said.

That meeting is on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in City Council chambers at 5:01 p.m.
