We are in the early stages of the 2026 NFL offseason, but head coach Liam Coen is already messaging what one of the primary objectives is heading into Year 2 with him leading the Jacksonville Jaguars.
There is no question that the 2025 reason was a resounding success for the Jaguars. In Year 1 under Coen and James Gladstone, the Jaguars went from four wins in 2024 to 13 wins this past year and were winners of the AFC South.
However, every year in the NFL is brand new and unlike the one before it. The Jaguars now must figure out how to not only replicate what happened in 2025, but build upon it, so that season doesn’t just become a blip in the radar.
“When it comes to our edge,” Coen said in a meeting, “we are constantly trying to find our edge. And as we go into Year 2 — Year 1 extremely important, right guys? For setting the tone and establishing the way that we want to operate, the way that we want to play, and going through that. I think we did that.
“There is no year more important than year two. There is no year because man, let’s be honest, there has been a lot of one-hit wonders. That’s the reality. And so, what are we doing to separate ourselves to make sure that never happens? So that we take the next step as a team.”

As impressive as the first season was under Coen, oftentimes it is in Year 2 of new regimes that we see teams make big jumps.
Compared to this time last year, the Jaguars are light-years ahead of where they were. Rather than spending the offseason implementing two new schemes, Jacksonville can dive deeper into those systems and build upon what’s been established.
Instead of Gladstone and the personnel department learning this roster on the fly, that groundwork has been laid, and the Jaguars can continue to down the path that has already been set.
However, as Coen also highlighted recently, there are still areas to improve upon.
Regardless of the success that Jacksonville had in 2025, the urgency level needs to remain high so this team can continue to have an edge, as Coen put it, and separate themselves from the rest of the NFL.
