A police officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) was arrested after officials say he battered a man at a Clay County business on Saturday.

Deputies with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service in reference to an assault at a business in the early morning hours. After arriving, they reportedly met the victim on the front patio of the bar, who said he was trying to “de-escalate” an argument when he was “battered” by the suspect.

Deputies say they were able to find and identify the suspect, John H. Tiedeman, 49, during a traffic stop. Following an interview, he was taken to the Clay County Jail and is now facing battery on a person 65 years of age or older.

Tiedeman is a 27-year veteran with JSO and was employed as a patrol officer. His latest assignment was in District 2, but as a result of his arrest, authorities say he has been administratively reassigned to the Tele-Serv Unit pending the criminal investigation.

This marks the fourth arrest of a JSO employee in 2026.
