TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A woman was arrested after allegedly attacking City of Tallahasseee commissioner Jack Porter.

Brenda Hicks, who claimed Porter stole her cat, was arrested last Thursday and is facing a battery charge, according to court records.

Arrest documents reveal the incident unfolded on 7th Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. last Thursday. Porter told law enforcement she was riding her bike when she saw a cat walking outside that she had rescued previously. She said she got off her bike and began playing with the cat.

Porter told police that while she was playing with the animal, Hicks approached her, shouting expletives and accusing her of stealing her cat.

Porter then allegedly told Hicks to leave her alone and tried walking back to her bike, but Hicks blocked her way.

According to arrest papers, Hicks allegedly began “pushing her and grabbing her face and hair. During the altercation, the two fell to the ground and Porter said her boyfriend returned in time to separate them.”

When police arrived, Hicks told them Porter had been “killing her cats by poisoning them and by taking them to the Humane Society.”

Porter told WCTV on Monday that she would never kill a cat and that, in fact, one of her life’s goals is to continue to rescue cats.

Police noted in their report that Porter had a “scratch that extended from the corner of the right side of her mouth toward her cheek” after the altercation. Porter told police Hicks had a history of accusing her of killing her cats.

Hicks has entered a not guilty plea and was on pre-trial release as of Friday.
