JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A middle school in Jacksonville held an active shooter drill while students stayed home for Presidents’ Day.
It was held at Jacksonville Commons Middle School on Monday morning.
First responders practiced their response to an active school shooter in a live simulation using dummies and actors.
They ran into the school while taking directions and planning their next moves. Actors and actresses were pulled out as if they’d been injured, as Jacksonville Police Chief Jarad Phelps looked on.
“It was a coordinated effort between us, the fire department, EMS, and schools to make sure we know what our true capabilities are, what lessons we can gather from this, and how we can make it better,” said Chief Phelps.
Last month, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office hosted a similar drill at a different Onslow County school.
