KISSIMMEE, Fla. — City leaders in Kissimmee are set to vote on an ordinance that would ban smoking and vaping in local parks.

The ordinance passed a first reading earlier this month after a student organization at Osceola High School called for change among their peers and within their community.

What You Need To Know

City leaders are set to hold a vote Tuesday night on an ordinance that would ban smoking and vaping in Kissimmee parks

The idea was spearheaded by the Students Working Against Tobacco group at Osceola High School
The ordinance would include signage at the entrance of every park and would grant city staff more authority to ask people to leave the parks if they are violating the ban

Students Working Against Tobacco, or SWAT, requested the change after hosting park cleanups and spreading awareness about the dangers associated with tobacco use.

If passed, the ordinance would require signage to be installed at the entrance of every park that says smoking and vaping are not allowed. The ordinance would also give city staff more authority to ask violators to leave the parks.

Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m.
