A large police presence is currently near a Tampa courthouse due to reported shots being fired.
TAMPA, Fla. — One person was arrested after a road rage incident in downtown Tampa, according to police.
Officials said the incident happened after 8 a.m. Wednesday, near the off-ramp of the Selmon Expressway onto Kennedy Boulevard, there was a report of a traffic crash involving multiple vehicles.
TPD said 29-year-old Kevin Arriola was driving a gray Mazda “erratically” along the ramp before crashing with other vehicles.
Arriola then got out of the Mazda with a gun and shot towards a red Chrysler 300, according to a news release.
A witness spoke to 10 Tampa Bay News and recalled the moments Arriola allegedly brought out his weapon.
“The guy jumped out of his car, ran to the car on the left side of traffic and started shooting,” said Reggie Gittens, a witness at the scene. “So I can see him in my rearview mirror shooting that car, and I could hear about six, seven shots and then he looked like he was turning towards me.”
Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reportedly spotted Arriola a short distance away from the scene and detained him. Tampa police then took him into custody.
Arriola was charged with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and shooting at/into a vehicle.
“This was an extremely dangerous and senseless situation that could have easily resulted in tragedy,” Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement. “We are grateful for our strong partnership with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and the actions of the deputies who quickly took the suspect into custody before anyone was seriously hurt.”
Officers said this appears to be an isolated incident, and no injuries were reported. There was also no threat to the school board or Rampello Magnet School, which is in the area.
Kennedy Boulevard was closed from the Selmon Express off-ramp to North Jefferson Street to allow for the investigation, but reopened sometime before 11:30 a.m.
