OXFORD, Ohio – Four members of the Miami University women’s basketball team scored in double figures as the RedHawks picked up a 65-53 win over Central Michigan on Wednesday evening. Miami (21-5, 12-1 MAC) was led by 18 points from Amber Scalia, while Núria Jurjo finished with 16. Amber Tretter added 13 points and Ilse de Vries chipped in with 11. Madi Morson had 17 points for CMU (16-9, 10-4).
How it Happened:
A jumper from Scalia, followed by a triple from de Vries spotted the RedHawks an early 5-2 lead. Miami, who battled foul trouble three minutes into the game, trailed 13-8 after one quarter of play.
To begin the second quarter Tamar Singer found Tretter for a layup and moments later Singer dished it to Jurjo for a corner triple. Miami reclaimed the lead with a 12-foot jumper from Jurjo and following two free throws from Singer and a bucket from Tretter the Red and White led 19-13 three minutes into the quarter. A three-point play from CMU trimmed the deficit, 22-20, but four-straight points from Scalia made it 26-20 with three minutes left in the half. After the Chippewas made it 26-22, back-to-back buckets from de Vries stretched Miami’s lead, 30-22. The RedHawks led 32-23 at the half.
The Chippewas scored the first four points of the half to climb to within five. Singer knocked down a three pointer and on Miami’s next possession and after a defensive stop, the sophomore used a bounce pass to hand de Vries an open layup on the fast break to claim a 37-27 advantage. Miami continued to lead by 10, 43-33, before Scalia connected on a straight-away three-pointer to give Miami their largest lead of the quarter. Miami led 49-37 heading to the fourth.
A CMU free throw at the 7:42 mark made it 52-40, which was answered by a Tretter layup and four-straight free throws from Scalia to hand Miami a 58-42 lead midway through the final stanza. The Chippewas would get no closer than 10 points as the RedHawks picked up the home victory.
