Every morning as I reach for the Sun Sentinel, I wonder what current fiasco I will read about in the Broward County public school district.

In previous letters to the editor, I have referred to the school board and district administration as Keystone Kops. But I’ve come to believe that this board and those who run the school district administration are way less competent than I had thought.

As far as I can tell, this School Board includes one member with a Ph.D. and two attorneys, along with a few educators, yet we can’t seem to get a single coherent action from the board.

They vote to approve items they do not research or understand, and then, when it goes south, they blame the administration or simply chalk the failures up to “mistakes.”

As for the district admininistrative employees, one was allowed to resign at her leisure, without consequences, and others remain employed despite their incompetence.

I voted for the pay referendum (in 2022). The district administration and the board failed me as a resident taxpayer and our teachers.

There is no more trust. I will not vote for the referendum again, or for any other money grab these failed people dream up. Nor will I vote for any incumbent to remain on the board. They all need to go.

Who’s the real loser?

President Trump called the American freestyle skier Hunter Hess a “real loser” on Truth Social after the Olympic athlete exercised his First Amendment rights and expressed negative feelings regarding the divided political climate in our country (Trump’s immigration agenda roils opening days of Winter Olympics, news article, Feb. 10).

On the other hand, can you think of one positive public comment the nation’s 45th President has made regarding the stellar athletes who are proudly representing our country at the Winter Olympics in Italy?

Perhaps the President should look in the mirror and see the real loser.

Non-English-speaking drivers

How will Florida justify allowing worldwide travelers (those possessing a valid driver’s license) who cannot read English to drive in the state, yet not allow non-English-reading Florida residents to obtain a driver’s license?

Must someone have to establish residency temporarily in another state to be able to get a driver’s license so they can drive where they really live?

Another question: Will car rental companies be permitted to let non-English readers rent their cars?

Someone in Florida is really trying to emulate and impress someone in Washington, D.C.

For the birds

It is beyond ridiculous that the Florida Legislature, instead of tackling real issues, is considering changing the state bird to the flamingo, a bird that spends most of its time in south Florida (House Bill 11).

Besides, everyone knows that the real South Florida bird is the early bird!

Osvaldo Valdes, Hollywood

Editor’s Note: The bill (HB 11) passed the House 112 to 1 and awaits a Senate floor vote. A prime cosponsor of the House bill is Rep. Chip LaMarca, R-Lighthouse Point. Every legislator from Broward and Palm Beach counties who was present voted yes — to rename the state bird.
