A life was saved on Interstate 75 in Marion County last month when a group of strangers came together to help a man after he went into cardiac arrest, according to Marion County Fire Rescue.On Jan. 30, Donald Porter and his wife, Sharon, were driving home to Illinois after visiting Florida for a softball tournament.On this road trip, as the couple neared Exit 352 on I-75, Donald Porter suddenly became unresponsive, MCFR said in a post on social media.Sharon Porter swiftly and safely pulled the car to the shoulder of the highway, exited the vehicle and began waving her arms, hoping to flag down help.A driver passing by noticed and stopped to help, calling 911, MCFR said. At the same time, a Citrus County deputy saw the situation as he was driving by and rushed to help, the post read. The group was able to determine that Donald Porter had gone into cardiac arrest. The deputy removed him from the vehicle and initiated CPR.According to MCFR, crews began to arrive on scene and worked to transport the couple to AdventHealth Ocala.MCFR has confirmed Donald Porter is now “on his way to recovery and getting back to playing softball.”He was discharged over the weekend and has since returned to Illinois with his wife.The group of people who each played a role in saving Donald Porter’s life was reunited and recognized for their efforts.”This is what community looks like,” MCFR said.
