Cape Coral City Council on Feb. 18 awarded planning firm Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc. a $432,000 contract to create a vision plan for two undeveloped city-owned sites.

The first, known as Academic Village, is a 180-acre property at Kismet Parkway and Del Prado Boulevard. The second, Burnt Store Property, is a 318-acre site on the west side of Burnt Store Road.

Cape Coral has identified the properties as opportunities for commercial and recreational development that could generate private investment, expand the commercial tax base and help establish the city’s identity, according to City Council meeting documents.

Kimley-Horn will lead a community engagement process, including design charrettes for residents and stakeholders to share ideas and help shape a common vision. The contract includes $394,000 for the firm’s basic scope of services and $38,000 for a fiscal impact analysis.Â
