Seminole begins management program after tree inventory
SEMINOLE — The Seminole Public Works Department has launched a proactive urban forestry program after completing an inventory of the city’s nearly 2,500 trees.
The program will focus on caring for existing trees while planning for the city’s future growth.
Ongoing efforts include pruning trees, removing dead or hazardous trees from public property, and developing a strategic planting program designed to increase tree canopy and enhance quality of life for residents today and for generations to come.
The city of Seminole just completed its first comprehensive tree inventory study, which was funded by a $9,900 grant from the U.S. Forest Service. The city matched the grant for a total cost of $19,800
A total of 2,448 trees were inventoried within city rights-of-way and city parks, giving the community its first clear picture of the public trees in Seminole neighborhoods. For the first time, the city has the data needed to create a comprehensive urban forest management plan that looks beyond individual trees and focuses on the long-term health of the entire canopy. This information will guide future planting, maintenance, and investment decisions. These results will help to create cooler streets, more attractive public spaces, and stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.
