The City of Fort Lauderdale announced that weekday operating schedule changes for the SE 17th Street Bridge will become permanent after approval by the United States Coast Guard. The bridge will not open at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, apart from federal holidays. The changes were made to reduce bridge openings during peak weekday travel times to help improve traffic flow along SE 17th Street corridor, while continuing to accommodate marine traffic.
“I want to thank the United States Coast Guard for working with the City on this update,” said Mayor Dean Trantalis. “The permanent schedule helps ease congestion during the peak hours and improves quality of life for residents and motorists, while maintaining waterway access critical to our yachting community.”
U.S. vessels and tugs with tows may still pass through the bridge at any time upon proper signal. The permanent schedule takes effect Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026.
“These changes make a noticeable difference,” said Commissioner Ben Sorensen. “It means less congestion, improved safety and a smoother commute without sacrificing marine navigation.”
