TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Fresh off his retirement announcement, Florida State and Buccaneers legend Gene Deckerhoff was the man of the hour on Thursday at the Governor’s Club.
The long-time radio voice of the ‘Noles was honored by the Florida Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday. He sat down with his long-time broadcast partner, William Floyd, for a trip down memory lane.

His stories kept the sold-out room laughing and reflecting. Gene said he’s settling into retirement just fine.
“In the business that I am in, I have been retired my entire life, because if you love what you do, you can’t call it work. So, I haven’t worked for at least 55 years,” he said.
Gene spent time as the sports director here at WCTV. He started broadcasting FSU basketball in 1974, football in 1979 and joined the Tampa Bay Bucs ten years after that.
