The district plans to use the money to expand the types of middle school sports offered, which in turn better prepares students for high school athletics.
PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Students in Pinellas County Schools will soon pay to participate in middle and high school athletics, a move district leaders say will strengthen programs and expand opportunities for students.
The district is implementing a $50 per sport fee starting in the 2026–27 school year. There will be a $200 family cap, meaning families will not pay more than that total amount, regardless of how many sports their children play.
Pinellas Schools Athletic Director Marc Allison tells 10 Tampa Bay News the decision followed community feedback requesting more sports opportunities for students.
The district plans to use the money to expand the types of middle school sports offered, which in turn better prepares students for high school athletics.
The money also addresses the rising cost of sports. Allison says Pinellas Schools also looked at how other school districts are addressing increasing costs for transportation, uniforms, equipment, and athletic trainers.

He said the district needed a way to help offset expenses. “Anytime you expand and offer more opportunities, that funding has to come from somewhere,” Allison said.
Along with the $50 fee, students will still be required to purchase athletic insurance separately, as they do now. Current insurance costs range from about $6 to $8 for most sports, with football costing more.
For families in a financial bind, Allison says financial assistance will be available, and the application process is still being finalized.
