JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Varsity 4 News4JAX softball Super 6 rankings will be published Thursday through the end of the regular season with the exception of a week off for spring break. Records are through Feb. 18.
Varsity 4 Super 6 softball rankings
Rank, School, Record, Class
1. Atlantic Coast (1-0, Class 7A)
Notable wins: None.
Glance: The Stingrays were excellent last year, going 22-6 and reaching the playoffs behind an unbelievably young lineup. The good news for Atlantic Coast? Just about every impact player from that squad returns. That includes leading hitters Stella Lynton (.446, 20 RBI) and Emma Cano (.405, 21 RBI) and both pitchers (Morgan Brown, Lily Maguire). This team has the potential to be elite this year.
2. Episcopal (1-0, Class 2A)
Notable win: Mandarin.
Glance: The Eagles were a constant presence in the Super 6 and return a large portion of that 22-6 team. Amelia Oreair (.453, 7 HR, 32 RBI) and Emily Davidson (.435, 20 RBI) are back to lead what should be a strong lineup. Riley Valent won 21 games last year and averaged a K per inning.
3. Baker County (1-0, Class 4A)
Notable wins: None.
Glance: The Wildcats are coming off a 20-5 season and are not even two years removed from playing for a state championship. Two-time All-News4JAX selection Baleigh Shields has already belted a homer for Baker County. Expect them to be battling for a spot in the state semifinals. Hurler Grace Masterson had eight decisions, 110 Ks and a 0.82 ERA last year in 68 innings. She’ll move into the No. 1 spot in the rotation.
4. Baldwin (1-0, Class 2A)
Notable wins: None.
Glance: The Indians aren’t going to drop off, even with quite a few graduation losses. Jazmine Ramos-Merced is the big bat here. She’s cracked 27 homers in high school. KK Fry, Lily Hubbard and Hayden Peebles are two other big names to watch for Baldwin.
5. Matanzas (1-0, Class 5A)
Notable wins: None.
Glance: The Pirates were sensational last year, rolling to a 23-2 record behind player of the year Leah Stevens. She’s now at the University of Florida, so Matanzas is going to have its work cut out for it. The good news is that the offense should be strong. McKenzie Manhart is one of the top returning bats, but the Pirates are loaded with underclass players.
6. Creekside (0-0, Class 7A)
Notable wins: N/A.
Glance: The Knights went 18-10 last year and return a good bit of the top of the offensive production (Hailey Cunningham hit .384 and Presley Brinkley followed at .366 with 7 HRs). Pitching will need some time after the graduation of Carly Dall, but the Knights always manage to muscle in to the conversation late in the year.
On the bubble
Bishop Snyder (1-0, Class 2A); Clay (1-0, Class 4A); Fleming Island (0-0, Class 5A); Paxon (1-0, Class 4A); Ponte Vedra (1-0, Class 5A); University Christian (1-0, Class 2A); West Nassau (1-0, Class 3A); Yulee (0-1, Class 3A)
