PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Brown baseball team jumped out to a 7-1 lead in Friday’s season opener, but Miami (Ohio) chipped away down the stretch to score 10 of the game’s final 11 runs to top the Bears 11-8 at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.
All told, 16 free passes (eight walks, eight hit batters) hindered the Bears in the contest. A big eighth-inning double that was lost in the sun also aided the RedHawks comeback.
Brown outhit Miami 12-8 in the game. Freshman shortstop Matt Luigs had three hits, including a double, and scored twice out of the leadoff spot in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Christian Butera went 2-for-4 with a homer, senior Logan Meusy added a pair of hits and a big late RBI, and sophomore DH Jack Edmunds added a solo homer for Brown. DJ Dillehay also added a double and three RBIs.
On the mound, senior Peter Dubie allowed five hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts over 5.0 innings in just his second career start.
The RedHawks got on the board first with a leadoff home run to start the bottom of the first.
Brown answered to take the lead with a pair of runs on the top of the third. Three consecutive singles with one out, including an RBI single to left field by Mark Henshon scored Meusy to tie the game, and Luigs later hustled home from third on an errant pickoff throw to put the Bears in front.
The power bats broke out in the fourth with a pair of solo homers to extend the lead. Butera led off the inning with a long home run to straightaway center field, and Edmunds followed two batters later with a shot off the left field foul pole to make it 4-1.
No doubt bomb from Butera to extend the lead!

Dillehay tacked on three more runs in the fifth with a huge bases clearing three-run double into the left field corner, scoring Luigs (double), Henshon (walk), and Mika Petersen (single) to spot Brown a 7-1 lead.

Miami dug into the lead with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-3. A big strike-em out, throw-em-out double play from Dubie and Brandon Chang got Brown out of further trouble.
The RedHawks continued to chip away with three runs in the sixth, coming on just one hit and taking advantage of three walks, three hit-by-pitches and a wild pitch, to cut it to 7-6 after six innings.
Brown got the lead back to two in the eighth as Alex Benevento led off with a double, stole third and scored on a huge two-out single to center by Meusy to make it 8-6.
In the bottom of the inning, the RedHawks roared back with five runs, all after two outs, to put the game away. A wild pitch, followed by an RBI single through the left side tied the game, then a pop up down the right field line got lost in the sun and plated three more runs to make it 11-8.
The Bears will round out their weekend in Florida tomorrow, Saturday, February 21 with two games against Illinois State at 11 a.m. and Indiana State at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege and live stats will be available. For links, visit the baseball schedule page.
