GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) – A Florida Highway Patrol trooper tragically died on Wednesday in Gadsden County after experiencing a medical emergency during training, according to the law enforcement agency.
Trooper Michael Diego died while “participating in a competitive process for the Patrol’s Criminal Interdiction Unit, being held at the FHP Training Academy,” according to a statement from the organization.
FHP says troopers on scene and Gadsden County EMS attempted lifesaving efforts, and he was flown to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Despite extraordinary lifesaving efforts of State Troopers, First Responders and medical staff, Trooper Diego tragically passed away with his loved ones by his side.
Diego joined FHP in 2021 as part of the 149th Recruit Class and served in the law enforcement organization for over four years in both the Fort Pierce and Fort Meyers districts.
He is the 55th trooper to pass in the line of duty.
He is survived by his mother, sister and fiancé, per FHP.
