A 12-year-old boy was shot on the night of Feb. 20 in Fort Pierce and flown to the hospital, according to officials.

Emergency crews responded to a shooting about 11:35 p.m. in the 500 block of North 22nd Street, said Fort Pierce police Maj. Michael Santiago.

They found the house itself had bullet holes and a 12-year-old boy inside the home had been hit by a round, Santiago said.

Officials determined someone pulled up to the house and opened fire, shooting through the front door, he said. Other people were inside the home, but only the boy was shot.

The boy had an upper torso wound and was flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach in critical condition, said St. Lucie County Fire District Division Chief Daniel Mikels.

Detectives don’t have any suspect information or vehicle description, Santiago said. They can’t confirm it was a drive-by shooting because no witnesses reported seeing or hearing anything.

Detectives recovered shell casings at the scene of the shooting, he said. They continued investigating on Feb. 21 and searching the area.
