TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – On Friday, the Greater Bond Community received four historical markers from the City of Tallahassee.
The Bond Community is said to be one of the oldest Black neighborhoods, producing prominent lawyers, educators, activists and more.
WCTV sat down with two local doctors, who have deep ties to the place they both call home.
Beyond the names listed on the new markers, family members also played a key role in shaping the strength of the community.
Greater Bond Neighborhood President, Dr. Vanessa Williams was raised in the area and has contributed to much of the revitalization in the community.
She shared that so much has changed but the love remains.
“The Greater Bond Neighborhood, it was such a close family,” Dr. Williams said.
“A lot of these people are people that came out of the community the neighborhood that had a passion and they still have a passion for it ‚” Williams said. “We’re making history even now.”
WCTV spoke with Dr. Sandra Allen, she said her grandfather was a well known deacon and businessman who poured his heart and resources into those around him.
Allen also mentioned she is glad to see some reminders of the Bond Community’s great past in those new markers.
“Look at the markers, read the history and learn about the community,” she said. “The more you learn the more you know the more you can do, the more you wanna do.”
Anyone can take a stroll through Speed Spencer Stephens Park and take a look at the markers at each corner, there is a special history lesson engraved for all to enjoy.
