Thousands attend open house at National MagLab in Tallahassee

  • February 23, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Thousands of people visited the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee Saturday for its annual Open House.

It was a free event that gives the public a look inside the world’s largest and most powerful magnet lab.

Visitors of all ages explored parts of the facility not normally open to the public, interacted with nearly 100 hands-on demonstrations and learned about the physics, chemistry and engineering research conducted at the lab year-round.

This year’s theme highlighted books and literature. “Books and science really share a curiosity and inspiration,” said Kristin Roberts, the communications director for the lab.

Roberts said the event is designed to make science approachable and exciting.

“Open house is an incredible time to show kids science at its heart is fun, and it’s about curiosity and asking questions and doing bold and exciting things, and that’s what open house does,” she said. “It really reminds all of us, kids themselves and kids of all ages, even grown-ups that remember science differently, that science at its heart is inspiring and fun.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Olen Butler also appeared at the event and did a short story reading.
