PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A new construction project is underway in the heart of a Tradition neighborhood, but instead of being another housing development, it is set to become a new church and preschool.

The project, led by Kingdom Community Ministries, is being built on three and a half acres of undeveloped land at the corner of Southwest Community Boulevard and Rowley Way. According to the ministry’s website, the new facility will span 20,000 square feet and will be one of the last few empty lots to be developed in the area.

Residents in the community appear to welcome the new project.

“I think personally at this time if they’re building a church anywhere, I would take that as a positive sign for the neighborhood,” said resident Todd Walker. “I don’t think there’s anything negative about saying a church is going up anywhere.”

The church will be the third Christian place of worship in a two-mile radius, serving as another sign of the rapid growth in the area.

“Tradition as a whole, there’s been a huge amount of growth in this area specifically,” said resident Jim Ricci.

Kingdom Community Ministries was unavailable for an on-camera interview, and the project’s completion timeline remains unclear.
