Tallahassee Police Department investigating threats to mosque

  • February 25, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee Police Department confirmed on Tuesday that it is investigating threats to the Islamic Center of Tallahassee, a mosque in Florida’s capital city.

According to Mahmoud Abdelhadi, the president of the ICT, someone taped a small American flag, the kind used to mark a gravestone, to the side of the mosque. The person or persons wrote “Not Welcome Go Home & Preach & Take that Stupid Quran with You.”

Abdelhadi also said he’s been getting threatening text messages, including one he shared with WCTV. In one text, the sender said “I will text you later.”

They added “was texting to let you know your time (is) up.”

In a statement, TPD said it takes threats to places of religious worship seriously.

“The Tallahassee Police Department is continuing to investigate messages reported on January 26, 2026, that raised concerns for a local Islamic center,” said Jerome Maples, a TPD spokesperson.

“Out of an abundance of caution, officers increased patrol presence in the area to provide reassurance and ensure continued safety.”

A review of court records indicates no arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed.

“TPD takes all threats seriously, particularly those involving places of worship. We remain committed to protecting every member of our community and maintaining open communication with community leaders,” Maples said.

He added no further threats had been received since January 2026. Abdelhadi said the texts were received on January 25, with the flag incident occurring the next day.

Abdelhadi noted the mosque is in the midst of Ramadan, one of the holiest months for Muslims.
