Our bike trail is becoming increasingly dangerous by the day as more [electric] bikes and [electric] motorcycles speed along the Pinellas Trail.

Local municipalities need to coordinate an effort to provide a safe environment for all bicyclists by posting speed limits and enforcing those limits by a police presence on bicycles.

Your help in shining a light on this issue could be key.

Thanks for any attention to this matter.

—Tom Hanley, Gulfport

I had a bike accident nine days ago and did not call the police. This terrible driver went through an intersection, where he was supposed to stop, knocked me off my bike at 44th Street and 26th Avenue. I was in shock lying on my back and felt OK.

He called himself Robert and wrote down info I found to be false days later. I got up and should have called the police, but all I wanted to do was bike home.

He did not apologize and said there wasn’t a stop sign for him traveling south on 44th Street, which was false. The deep bruising did not bother me until four days later. And so the lesson is learned: Call the police.
