TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – After a chilly start to the week, spring-like conditions are returning quickly to North Florida and South Georgia. Temperatures will climb into the low 70s on Wednesday, with even warmer conditions expected to continue through the weekend and into early March.
Mild evening and overnight
Wednesday evening will remain mild as clouds continue to increase across the region. Temperatures will drop to the 50s overnight, much warmer than the chilly start to the week. Southwest winds will continue through the evening with gusts potentially reaching 25 mph, lighter this evening and overnight.
A few passing showers are possible overnight, particularly for areas along and west of the Tallahassee-to-Albany line, but widespread rain is not expected until Thursday. Conditions will become increasingly moist overnight as a new weather system approaches.
Beneficial rain arrives Thursday and Friday
The main weather event arrives Thursday and Friday as a cold front approaches the region. Showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread, with rainfall totals between 0.5″ and 1.0″ over those two days.
While any rain is beneficial during the ongoing drought, these amounts will do little to alleviate the long-term impacts of the drought. However, the moisture will help ease short-term dry conditions across the region.
A couple of strong thunderstorms are possible on Friday, particularly as the cold front moves through. The primary concerns with any strong storms will be wind gusts up to 40 mph and small hail. No widespread severe weather is expected, but isolated strong storms cannot be ruled out.
Patchy fog is also possible Friday morning and possibly again Saturday morning.
Warm weekend
After the frontal passage Friday night, a drying trend will begin Saturday. Temperatures will remain warm this weekend and into early next week, with highs in the 70s to around 80 degrees. Sunday looks to be dry with pleasant conditions.
Looking ahead
Temperatures will continue to rebound above normal through the first week of March. The next significant weather system won’t arrive in the next seven days.
