Alberto Carvalho, the former superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools who went on to become superintendent for the Los Angeles school district, had his Los Angeles home and office raided by the FBI Wednesday.

The FBI also searched a residence in Southwest Ranches in Broward County Wednesday as part of the case, but did not give the address of the home, the FBI’s Miami Field Office confirmed to the Herald. Carvalho is connected to two addresses in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, but none in Southwest Ranches, according to the Broward County property appraiser website.

He also owns a home in Miami Shores and two Biscayne Boulevard condos, Miami-Dade property records show.

Carvalho could not be immediately reached for comment.

FBI agents served a search warrant on Carvalho’s Los Angeles office and home Wednesday morning but declined to say why he is under investigation, the agency confirmed to the Miami Herald. The warrants are sealed.

Carvalho is superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Before his move to L.A. in 2022, Carvalho served as the Miami-Dade school district’s superintendent for 14 years.

Carvalho has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Carvalho came to the United States as an undocumented immigrant from Portugal when he was 17 years old.

He first started his educational career as a physics teacher at Miami Jackson Senior High School after graduating from Barry University at 25.

He’s won several national awards during his tenure as Miami-Dade superintendent, such as National Superintendent of the Year. The school district also won the 2012 Broad Prize for Education during his tenure for its academic achievements in Black and Hispanic students, one of the most prestigious prizes in education.
