LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) – Leon County Sheriff’s Office, along with state and financial partners, are warning against an increase in impersonation scam calls, targeting Leon County residents.
These scams involve people posing as law enforcement officers, court officials, government agencies and other organizations to intimidate victims into sending money or giving out personal information.
“You will never have a Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy call you and say we’re coming to your house, we’re going to collect your money, you don’t have to go to court, that’s never going to happen” Sheriff McNeil said.
Officials say in these cases, it is very hard to get your money back and the best thing to do if you get a call like this is to hang up.
“First and foremost hang up and then report it to law enforcement,” officials said.
Investigators said the most common scam call is being told you missed jury duty. Other common calls include a loved one being arrested and impersonating banks.
A recent investigation found a woman from South Carolina behind a jury scam call. She is waiting to be extradited to Florida.
FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass said law enforcement often isn’t aware of when it happens.
“These types of scams go wildly unreported, many people are embarrassed that they lost their money” Glass said.
He said it’s important to report these scams so law enforcement knows what they are dealing with.
Those who believe they’ve been a target of a scam should contact the Leon County Sheriff’s Office.
