OXFORD, Ohio — Miami’s Malena Sabez was named the NCAA Division 1 freshman of the week by sports outlet Synapse Sports, the outlet announced Wednesday.
The announcement came after Sabez led the RedHawks to a 2-0 weekend featuring shutout wins over conference foes Central Michigan and Ball State. In addition to a goal in Friday’s 8-0 shutout over Central Michigan, Sabez scored all five of Miami’s goals in their 5-0 shutout over Ball State. Each of the goals came on a penalty corner. She had 19 total shots, 15 shots on goal, and a game winner to help the RedHawks to improve to 6-1 in MAC play. Additionally, Sabez’s 19 season goals make her the leading freshmen in RedHawk program history for goals scored and the nation’s leading freshman in goals per game. She now has the eighth-highest total goals for freshmen in Division 1 history since the NCAA took over statistics in 2006.
Sabez and the RedHawks will return to action this Friday for a road game against Ohio at 1 p.m. They will return home the following Friday, Oct. 31, for a game against Longwood.
