Florida lawmakers prepare for a ‘penniless society’ with new bill that requires cash transactions be rounded up

  • February 27, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Florida Capital Bureau) – Floridians may soon have to round up when paying cash.

The Florida Senate unanimously passed a bill that will round up all cash payments to the nearest nickel or dime. This would not apply to any card or digital transactions.

The bill comes after the U.S. Mint stopped production of pennies in November last year.

More Florida politics:

According to the Secretary of the Treasury, the penny is no longer necessary to meet the needs of the United States. Their website maintains that the penny remains usable.

Lawmakers are preparing for what they see as a “penniless society.”

Senator Don Gaetz, the bill sponsor, spoke about the trajectory of the nation’s economy.

“So now we’re moving towards a penniless society economy, and this bill provides some guidance to let retailers know how to proceed,” he said.

The bill is awaiting a vote by the House.
