The woman was struck while in the roadway near the intersection with Richmond Park Drive North Thursday night.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a woman was hit and killed by a car on Hodges Boulevard Thursday night.
The crash reportedly happened at around 7:45 p.m.Â
In a news briefing, the sheriff’s office said the driver, a man in his mid-20s, was driving a sedan northbound in the outside lane of Hodges Blvd. and nearing the intersection with Richmond Park Drive North when he struck the woman in the roadway.Â
The woman, described as being in her mid-40s, was taken to a local hospital and pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.Â
JSO says the driver stayed on scene after the crash and is cooperating with investigators.
Police did not specify if the woman was crossing the street or if she was in a crosswalk.
This is the 10th deadly crash in Duval County this year involving a pedestrian, according to the agency. That’s double the amount last year around this same time.
“Even one life lost is one too many,” JSO said in a post on the topic just one day before this crash. “The pedestrians killed have families and friends who didn’t deserve to lose their loved one. We don’t want to lose another person on our roadways.”
Pedestrians are advised to use sidewalks and crosswalks when available and make sure they wear bright, visible clothing at night. Drivers should stay alert for pedestrians, limit distractions and slow down in areas of high foot traffic.Â
