DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — A woman was killed and man was critically injured in a crash on State Road 9B in Duval County Thursday night, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said in a release that a 20-year-old driver was traveling southbound on SR-9B, approaching Flagler Center Boulevard in the inside lane, when they “failed to observe” two vehicles stopped ahead that were involved in an earlier collision.

According to FHP, the woman and man were outside their vehicles exchanging information when the 20-year-old attempted to brake and steer their vehicle into the inside emergency lane to avoid the stopped vehicles. Troopers said the driver struck both pedestrians in the paved emergency lane before coming to rest in the grass median.

The woman, identified as a 38-year-old from St. Johns, was pronounced dead on scene, according to FHP. Meanwhile, the man, identified as a 35-year-old from Fairfield, Ohio, was taken to Memorial Hospital with critical injuries. The 20-year-old driver, a St. Augustine man, suffered minor injures.

FHP did not release the identities of those involved in the crash.
