Freddy Peralta will be the New York Mets‘ Opening Day starter for their matchup with NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 26 at Citi Field, manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters on Feb. 27.
It will be Peralta’s third straight Opening Day start after he started the last two for the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 29-year-old right-hander is entering his first season with the Mets after being acquired in a January trade that also added right-hander Tobias Myers and sent Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat to the Brewers.

In the process, the Mets are receiving the top-of-the-rotation arm they were badly missing in 2025. Peralta finished fifth in NL Cy Young voting after posting a 17-6 record with a 2.70 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 204 strikeouts in 176â…” innings across 33 starts.
Peralta, who is earning $8 million this season and due to become a free agent after it, has made at least 30 starts and struck out 200 batters in each of the last three seasons. He was an All-Star in 2025 and 2021.

The Mets will turn to their newcomer rather than their homegrown, up-and-comer Nolan McLean, who is electrified the fan base with a 5-1 record and 2.06 ERA in his first eight major-league starts last season.
The rotation appears relatively settled beyond Peralta and McLean, and it could begin with six starters, barring injury. Clay Holmes is coming off a successful campaign in his transition to starting pitcher. Meanwhile, left-hander David Peterson is coming off his first All-Star selection, while Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga are both looking to bounce back from disjointed 2025 campaigns.
