JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A big 9-0 run in the third quarter for Jacksonville University was too much for the Brown women’s lacrosse team to overcome in a 16-10 defeat on Friday evening. After Brown controlled the game in the first half, Jacksonville outscored the Bears 11-3 in the second half.
Freshmen Tessie Batchelder and Caroline Nozzolillo both had hat tricks with three goals apiece for the Bears. Six of Brown’s 10 goals came on free position attempts. Jacksonville outshot Brown 24-8 in the game and held the 19-8 edge in draw controls.
The Bears jumped out to a 5-4 lead after one quarter, spurred by four free position goals. Batchelder got the Bears on the board with her first career goal on a free position attempt just over two minutes in, and Riley Peterson added another goal less than one minute later for the 2-0 lead.
After three straight from Jacksonville, Brown scored three unanswered of their own from Nozzolillo, Adele Atherton and Annie Dignazio before Jacksonville scored in the closing seconds of the period to make it a one-goal game after one.
The defense tightened up for both sides in the second quarter and Brown controlled the play with the two teams combining for just three goals in the frame. Batchelder and Nozzolillo each scored their second of the game to put Brown up 7-4 at the 8:13 mark. Jacksonville got one back with 2:31 remaining to cut it to 7-5 going into halftime.
A quick tally from Batchelder right out of the locker room pushed the lead to 8-5 in the opening minute, but five consecutive goals by the Dolphins in a span of 2:35 quickly pushed Jacksonville in front 10-8, prompting a Brown timeout at 8:55.
The run extended to 7-0 by the 6:02 mark as the Dolphins took a four-goal lead into the fourth quarter. The Bears were unable to convert on both of their free position attempts in the third quarter, as well as a two-player advantage late in the frame.
Jacksonville scored two quick goals to extend the run to 9-0 and hold a 14-8 lead early in the fourth before the Bears had a goal overturned by replay.
Brown finally broke the streak with the third goal of the game from Nozzolillo on a free position attempt with 6:38 to go, ending a scoreless streak of over 22 minutes. Ruby Sliwkowski added a goal with 2:43 remaining before Jacksonville found the back of the net twice over the final 1:31 for the 16-10 final.
The Bears will stay in Florida for their next match on Sunday afternoon, March 1 with a matchup at USF. Start time in Tampa is set for noon on ESPN+.
