GREENSBORO – The Elon men’s tennis team (2-5) dropped a tight affair against Florida Gulf Coast (2-8) on Friday night at Piedmont Indoor Tennis in Greensboro, falling 4-2.

After the Phoenix secured the doubles point, the Eagles won four of the five completed singles matches to clinch the victory. Four of the six singles contests went into third sets.

The match was originally scheduled to be played outdoors at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center but was moved indoors due to afternoon rain showers in Elon.

The Rundown

Elon took the doubles point behind a pair of victories from first-time duos.
On Court 2, Nick Fisk and Charles Pilet paired up for a 6-3 victory against Stefan Correa and Pablo Paternostro. It was Fisk’s second career dual doubles victory, both of which have come this season at Piedmont. The win was Pilet’s first to come at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The Phoenix clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory from Oskar Antinheimo and Rafael Ymer at the No. 3 spot, as the tandem took down Mika Bunjes and Gustav Hasslegren. The win was Ymer’s third straight in doubles and Antinheimo’s first doubles victory of the campaign.
Veljko Krstic and Nikola Parichkov were knotted at 5-5 on Court 1 against Jonathan Baron and Tanner Povey when their match was halted.
The Eagles tied the score at 1-1 with a straight-set triumph at No. 4 singles.
Antinheimo nearly overcame a double-break deficit in the final set of his singles match on Court 3. After splitting the first two sets against Paternostro, Antinheimo trailed 1-5 in the deciding frame. The senior broke Paternostro when he served for the match in the seventh game of the set and then held for 3-5. With Paternostro again serving for the win, Antinheimo got the second break back as well to put the final set back on serve. However, Paternostro broke Antinheimo in the 10th game, holding on for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win.
After Antinheimo’s comeback bid was extinguished, Elon did complete a monumental turnaround at No. 2 singles. Parichkov split his first two sets against Baron and trailed 2-5 in the deciding frame, and like Antinheimo was down a pair of breaks. Parichkov broke back for 3-5 and then consolidated for 4-5. Following a changeover, Parichkov broke Baron for a second time while serving for the match and then backed up the break with a hold to go ahead 6-5.
Baron recovered in the 12th game, holding serve to take the match into a deciding-set tiebreak. Baron won the first three points of the breaker and raced out to a 4-1 lead, but Parichkov again mounted a charge, winning five points in a row to go ahead, 6-4. Baron saved one match point on his own serve, but Parichkov closed out the improbable win on the ensuing match point to win the match, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (5) and level the overall score, 2-2.
Parichkov’s win was his first in singles since Elon’s season opener against Saint Joseph’s on Jan. 10.
Florida Gulf Coast won another three-set tussle on Court 1 to take a 3-2 lead.
Needing victories at both the Nos. 5 and 6 spots to win the match, Elon turned to Alonso Roca and Nick Fisk, who were both making their first singles appearances since the Phoenix’s last match at Piedmont against UNCG on Feb. 8.
Roca played a marathon first-set tiebreak on Court 5 against Bunjes. The junior saved a pair of set points to go from 4-6 down to 6-6. They continued to trade points until Bunjes finally pulled through, 11-9. Bunjes then won the second set, 6-2, to clinch a Florida Gulf Coast victory.
Fisk had just started a final set at the No. 6 spot against Stefan Correa when the contest was stopped.
The loss was Elon’s first this season after winning the doubles point.
Six of Elon’s seven matches this season have been played indoors. The Phoenix is 2-4 in those contests.
Elon is now 1-1 in matches played at Piedmont this spring.
