The Florida Highway Patrol is honoring the life and service of Trooper Michael Diego, who tragically passed away in the line of duty on Feb. 18, with a video tribute and an online fundraiser to assist his family.
Diego died during a medical emergency while participating in a competitive process for the Patrol’s Criminal Interdiction Unit at the FHP Training Academy in Gadsden County. The tragedy occurred while Diego was participating in a “a competitive process for the Patrol’s Criminal Interdiction Unit, being held at the FHP Training Academy.”

Fundraiser for the family of Trooper Michael Diego raises more than $14,000
“Despite lifesaving efforts, he tragically passed away with his loved ones at his side at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital,” the Gofundme fundraiser states. “All proceeds will go directly to Diego’s family to help them financially through this extremely difficult and painful process. Thank you for all the support during this difficult time.”
Already, more than $14,000 has been raised toward a $16,000 goal.
The fundraiser comes as the Florida Highway Patrol shared a solemn video of Diego’s casket being transported back home from Tallahassee to south Florida.
“From the first mile to the last, Trooper Michael Diego’s brothers and sisters in law enforcement were by his side,” the Florida Highway Patrol wrote in a post. “Thank you to all who helped honor him and bring home.”
