CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Cape Coral’s Jason Verdow Memorial Park buzzed with excitement as Cape National’s opening day unfolded for young athletes. The park was alive with families eager to return to a routine they had been anticipating.

The scene was set with the crack of the bat and the echo of cheering fans.

“Just the atmosphere here. You can see all the vendors, all the players, all the parents, and coaches. So, huge support. Great turnout,” said Jacob Charles, coach of the Cape National Royals.

For some families, like the father-son duo present, the day carried extra significance.

“To see all the Army people and to see all my teammates and probably win,” said Reed Charles, a baseball player.

Coach Charles shared his excitement about mentoring young players.

“Handing down those practice skills and just skills in general to the younger kids and then watching them develop. That’s the exciting thing, watching kids grow and love the sport,” he said.

For seasoned players, opening day is a cherished tradition.

“It’s just awesome that everyone is representing this field,” said baseball player Tommy Dotson.

He added, “Every single opening day we play games, and I just love the games. My favorite part about the games is having fun, hitting the ball, catching, that kind of stuff.”

Players like Andres Sarmiento reveled in the thrill of the game.

“I feel like the best part about opening day is hitting some nukes, home runs, triples, doubles,” he said.

The new season has officially begun, and the excitement is palpable.

“Play ball!” exclaimed Reed Charles, encapsulating the day’s spirit.
