The No. 17 Miami Hurricanes baseball team’s series finale against the No. 10 Florida Gators on Sunday has been canceled due to inclement weather in the area.
First pitch was initially scheduled for 1 p.m., with the game set to be streamed on ACC Network Xtra. A new start time has not yet been announced.
Fans were asked to clear the stands at 12:20 p.m due to lightning around Mark Light Field. The tarp was put over the infield at 12:45 p.m. as rain began to pick up.
Miami head coach J.D. Arteatga and Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan convened at 1:30 p.m., as heavy rain continued to fall and lightning continued to strike, and mutually agreed to call off the finale.
The forecast shows potential rain around the Coral Gables area throughout the afternoon Sunday.
NCAA rules say that the field needs to be cleared for at least 30 minutes following any lightning strike within an 8-mile radius of the field. That clock restarts with every subsequent lightning strike.
Miami (10-2) dropped the first two games of the series to Florida (11-1), falling 7-2 on Friday and 8-4 on Saturday.
The Hurricanes next host Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday (6 p.m., ACC Network Xtra) and then open Atlantic Coast Conference play against Boston College with a three-game weekend series. Those games have start times of 7 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. All will be streamed on ACC Network Xtra.
