LCSO hosts youth basketball tournament to help build relationships with teens

  • March 1, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Leon County Sheriff’s Office hosted its annual Capital County Community Classic basketball tournament Saturday to help bridge the gap between law enforcement and teenagers.

“It’s always important for them to see us outside of uniform,” LCSO Chief of Investigations Bobby Green said. “We’re not in an authoritative kind of role. We’re kind of just hanging out and just chilling with them.”

The event brought together dozens of teens to compete in an elimination-style basketball tournament. The grand prize was $1,500 for the winning team.

LCSO said gun violence is higher among young men between the ages of 14 and 24. Green said the tournament gives them a more positive atmosphere.

“We’re out here trying to engage with our youth, and trying to have them to put down the guns and pick up a basketball,” Green said.

He said LCSO hopes the tournament can be the foundation for building stronger relationships with teenagers to keep them on the right path.
