Miami (OH) continues rise up AP poll entering final week of regular season
THE BREAK, CHRIS AND ASHLEY. ALL RIGHT, KEVIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE’LL PRAISE AND PUSH BACK OVER A NEWLY APPROVED ARENA AT MIAMI UNIVERSITY. TODAY, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED BUILDING A STATE OF THE ART FACILITY, AS WELL AS ADDITIONAL PARKING AND REC FIELDS. SPACE IS CURRENTLY OCCUPIED BY MILLETT HALL AND COOK FIELD, AND THAT’S WHERE WE FIND WLWT NEWS FIVE’S AARON THOMAS, WHO’S LIVE IN OXFORD WITH SUPPORTERS AND OPPONENTS OF THIS NEW PROJECT. AARON. YEAH, ASHLEY, WE SPOKE WITH THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY. HE SAYS THAT THIS FACILITY BEHIND US IS SIMPLY OUTDATED, AND THEY WANT TO GIVE MIAMI A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE. BUT WITH THE PRICE TAG OF ABOUT $242 MILLION. CRITICS SAY THIS IS A MISUSE OF MONEY OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR SAY AYE. AYE. ANY OPPOSED? THE RESOLUTIONS ARE ADOPTED. MIAMI UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES GIVING THE GREEN LIGHT TO BUILD A NEW FACILITY ON COOK FIELD TO REPLACE THE CURRENT MILLETT HALL. JUST REAL EXCITED FOR OUR STUDENT ATHLETES AND REALLY FOR THE WHOLE CAMPUS AND WHAT THIS IS GOING TO DO TO HELP GROW MIAMI AND PREPARE IT FOR THE FUTURE, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR DAVID SAYLOR SAYS. THE NEARLY 60 YEAR OLD HALL PRESENTS OPERATIONAL CHALLENGES. A NEW FACILITY CAN ACT AS A CRITICAL TOOL FOR RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION. I ACTUALLY THINK IT’S GOING TO HELP GROW MORE ACADEMIC RESOURCES BY ENROLLMENT DRIVEN DECISIONS THAT STUDENTS ARE GOING TO MAKE TO COME TO MIAMI IN THE FUTURE AT A PRETTY TRYING TIME FOR HIGHER EDUCATION. 89% SAY NO, 89% SAY NO. OTHERS OPPOSE THE PROJECT. STUDENTS IN FACULTY PROTESTED THE PROPOSAL AHEAD OF FRIDAY’S VOTE. IT’S AS IF THE UNIVERSITY HAS PLACED ATHLETICS ABOVE EDUCATION ENTERTAINMENT BEFORE FACULTY AND PROFITS OVER STUDENTS. A WIDESPREAD OPPOSITION TO THIS PROJECT SHOWS HOW MUCH PEOPLE LOVE AND VALUE COOK FIELD. THE TIMELESSNESS OF OUR BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS AND TOWN, AND ITS RICH IDENTITY AND HISTORY. THESE CONVERSATIONS UNFOLD AS THE MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM ENJOYS A HISTORIC, UNDEFEATED RUN. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR SAYLOR BELIEVES A NEW HOME GIVES THEM A COMPETITIVE EDGE IN A FAST CHANGING SPORTS LANDSCAPE. I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT MIAMI ATHLETICS IS IS GOING TO BE STRONG AND VIBRANT IN THIS NEW FUTURE OF WHATEVER THE NCAA LANDSCAPE IS GOING TO BE, AND THIS ARENA IS TESTAMENT TO THAT. NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT A TIMELINE. WE’RE TOLD THAT CONSTRUCTION IS SUPPOSED TO TAKE PLACE ANYWHERE BETWEEN SPRING OR SUMMER OF THIS YEAR, TO HAVE A NEW FACILITY UP AND RUNNING BY FALL OF 2028. REPORTING LIVE IN OXFORD, AARON THOMAS WLWT NEWS FIVE. AARON, IN TERMS OF PRICING, HOW IS THE UNIVERSITY PLANNING TO FUND THIS AND WHAT’S THE IMPACT ON STUDENTS? CERTAINLY LEARNED A LOT AT TODAY’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING. ASHLEY AND THE UNIVERSITY SAYS THEY PLAN TO FUND THIS PROJECT BY RAISING MONEY. PHILANTHROPY AND BONDS. BUT THERE ARE NO PLANS TO PASS
