March 2, 2026 – Port Charlotte, FL

A wanted homicide suspect pulled a firearm and attempted to shoot a Charlotte County deputy during his arrest.

On February 20, 2026, Charlotte County deputies received intelligence that two suspects in a Sarasota County burglary were driving through their jurisdiction in a rental car. After observing a traffic violation, deputies stopped the vehicle and made contact with the occupants. The driver was identified as Amy Lee (1/21/1985), and the passenger refused to provide his identification. Initially, neither Lee nor the passenger complied with deputy commands to exit the vehicle but eventually did so when told they would be arrested for obstruction.

While deputies spoke with the suspects, a member of the Strategic Targeted Area Response (STAR) unit ran a history check on Lee, finding a 2024 arrest in Lee County on multiple felony charges. In those cases, she had a co-defendant by the name of Brian Hewson (8/2/1974). Hewson was confirmed to be the passenger in the rental vehicle. It was also learned that Hewson had multiple warrants for his arrest.

As deputies then attempted to place Hewson under arrest, he immediately resisted. The STAR member drew his agency-issued taser and gave a warning before deploying it. At the same time, Hewson pulled a concealed firearm and pointed it directly at the deputy, pulling the trigger. Although the weapon was loaded, there was not a round in the chamber, resulting in the gun not firing. The deputy discharged additional taser probes and observed Hewson attempting to re-rack the firearm as they took effect. Thankfully, due to the neuromuscular incapacitation, Hewson was unable to maintain control of the gun and it was secured by deputies.

“Let me be clear: this individual is lucky to be alive today. While I am thankful it did not result in that, I want to be sure it is understood that my deputies are trained to eliminate a lethal threat with deadly force. They deserve to go home to their families after their shift. This despicable human tried to take one of my deputies out instead of being a man and accepting accountability for his own decisions. Now he will face the justice he has tried to dodge for so long… and I hope he spends the rest of his days behind bars.”

Sheriff Bill Prummell

Hewson was arrested for the multiple warrants, including one for homicide in Pennsylvania, one for failure to appear in Pennsylvania, and charges in Lee County related to trafficking stolen property. Additionally, he was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer for intentionally pointing a firearm at a CCSO deputy, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of controlled substance (1.1 grams of fentanyl found in the vehicle), resisting with violence, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held at the Charlotte County Jail without bond.
