TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Non-conference, conference, and the post-season are the three phases to any athletic schedule. Florida A&M softball closed out phase one over the weekend, a tough non-conference slate that’s hopefully prepared them for phase two.
SWAC play begins this weekend for the Rattlers, and how’s this for an opener? A road series at rival Jackson State, the team who beat FAMU in the SWAC championship game last season.
This weekend is the first step to getting to their ultimate goal, a SWAC championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Rattlers learned a lot about themselves over the first half of the season, and now they’re ready to roll and ready to show everyone what Rattler softball is all about.
“Our first weekend playing Jackson State at Jackson State, that’s always going to be a good game regardless,” said senior Neriah Lee. “We’re really just pumped, ready to compete for what we want to get back from last year.”
“The tension is going to be crazy. The talking is going to be insane,” added junior Kiara Beltre about opening at Jackson State. “You mentally have to be fully there, you have to be strong mentally and physically. Coach Beal has us doing everything you could imagine. I definitely think we’re prepared to come back better than last year.”
Game one of that SWAC opener at Jackson State is Friday, followed by a doubleheader Saturday to close out the series.
