Eli Putnam has his first signature moment as a Florida State Seminole.
With FSU’s game against Jacksonville tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, he delivered a walk-off single to center, giving FSU a 7-6 win Tuesday night at Dick Howser Stadium. They improved to 9-2 with the win and have won their last five games.
It was a comeback win for the Seminoles, who fell behind 5-0 in the top of the first as Jacksonville chased starter Rhett Vaughn from the game after he recorded just one out. FSU wasted no time scoring five runs of its own, and the game was tied 5-5 in the third.
FSU took a 6-5 lead in the fifth, but Jacksonville responded with another run in the seventh to tie the game. Florida State’s bullpen was excellent as Kevin Mebil, Gabe Nard, Cade O’Leary, and John Abraham allowed just one run over 8 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and striking out 12.
Here is how the Seminoles pulled off the win.
ELI PUTNAM WALKS IT OFF FOR FSU
Eli Putnam ended the game for the Seminoles with a walk-off single, scoring Hunter Carns and giving FSU a 7-6 win over the Jacksonville Dolphins.
Florida State is threatening to end the game
Hunter Carns started the inning with a great at-bat, working a full count before hitting a double to right center, his second of the game. Carter McCulley was trying to bunt him over, but he walked on four pitches. A balk got them both into scoring position, and Jacksonville is making a pitching change.
Mid 9th: FSU 6, Jacksonville 6
John Abraham worked around a one-out walk, striking out three more batters to keep it tied entering the bottom of the ninth. He has six strikeouts in 2 2/3 scoreless innings of work.
End 8th: FSU 6, Jacksonville 6
The top of FSU’s lineup was able to make anything happen in the eighth inning, going down in order with two more strikeouts. The Seminoles have now struckout 14 times.
Jacksonville had a great shot to take the lead after a one-out triple with the game tied at 6-6 in the 8th inning. John Abraham responded with a strikeout and a groundout to strand the runner at third.
Florida State is unable to retake the lead
The Seminoles had a chance to retake the lead in the seventh inning as John Stuetzer and Cal Fisher were on in scoring position for Chase Williams with two outs. Williams struckout swinging on a checked swing and was displeased when the home umpire made the call and did not check. Replay made it look like he had checked his swing, instead it is a 6-6 game in the 8th inning.
John Abraham gets it done for Florida State
John Abraham once again stepped up for the Seminoles, strikingout the two batters he saw to end the inning. He has not allowed a run since the first series of the season.
FSU is turning to John Abraham
Jacksonville is threatening to take the lead in the seventh with two runners on and just one out. The Seminoles have turned to John Abraham, who has been their top reliever this season.
The Dolphins have tied the game in the sixth after a walk, stolen base, and a single put runners on the corners with one out. A passed ball brought the tying run home when the runner from first took off, and Hunter Carns tried to catch a low pitch and throw him out, but never caught the ball.
End 6th: FSU 6, Jacksonville 5
Jacksonville pitcher Dominic Pieto struckout the side in the sixth inning, and the lead is still just one run. The Seminoles have struck out 10 times through six innings.
Cade O’Leary keeps Jacksonville scoreless
Cade O’Leary replaced Gabe Nard to start the sixth inning and kept the scoreless streak alive, retiring Jacksonville in order with two strikeouts to keep FSU up 6-5. Nard allowed one hit and walked two batters in 2.0 innings, adding two strikeouts.
End 5th: FSU 6, Jacksonville 5
The Seminoles took the lead, but were unable to get some insurance as Gabe Fraser struckout looking with the bases loaded to end the inning. Florida State has stranded seven runners through five innings.
Florida State has its first lead of the game after John Stuetzer scored Hunter Carns with a bunt. It wasn’t perfect, but it easily scored Carns, and the pitcher fell, allowing Stuetzer to reach, giving them two on with nobody out.
Link Jarrett pinch hit Carter McCulley for Brody DeLamielleure. While McCulley walked, was 2-2 with a home run, double, and two RBI in his first game back after missing five games with a concussion.
Myles Bailey makes a sensational play
Myles Bailey has done it with his bat and his glove in this game. He showcased his range on a grounder, making a leaping catch to grab the ball and start the double play, ending the inning. Jacksonville has not scored since the 1st inning.
Florida State wastes a scoring chance
The Seminoles had a great chance to take a lead in the fourth after Chase Williams walked and stole second to start the inning. The top of the lineup was unable to come through as Gabe Fraser, Noah Sheffield, and Myles Bailey all struckout looking, keeping it a 5-5 game.
Gabe Hard was able to keep the game tied at 5-5 after a two-out walk and single put the go-ahead run in scoring position. He got a groundout to second to end the frame and give FSU the chance to take their first lead.
End 3rd: FSU 5, Jacksonville 5
Florida State has tied the game after scoring five unanswered runs. Kevin Mebil was excellent, allowing just one base runner over 2 2/3 innings to allow the Seminoles to get back into the game. Gabe Nard is taking over to start the fourth inning.
Brody DeLamielleure is back and making his presence felt. He homered on the first pitch of the third inning, tying the game at 5-5. In his first game back after missing five games with a concussion, he is 2-2 with a double, a homer, and two RBI.
Kevin Mevil is cruising for FSU
Kevin Mebil has stepped up for the Seminoles after Rhett Vaughn recorded just one out. He has pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just one base runner on a walk. His shutdown work has allowed the offense to get the Seminoles back into the game.
End 2nd: Jacksonville 5, Florida State 4
The Seminoles were only able to get one run as Hunter Carns struckout, stranding runners at second and first. Each team has six hits and has made an error through two innings.
FSU got another run thanks to a sacrifice-fly from Noah Sheffield, making it a 5-4 Jacksonville lead. Chase Williams started it with a single and got to third on a bunt by Gabe Fraser that Jacksonville couldn’t field. Sheffield already has a double and scored a run.
End 1st: Jacksonville 5, Florida State 3
The Seminoles answered Jacksonville’s big inning with one of their own, scoring three runs on four hits. Both pitching staffs will look to step up in the second.
FSU is chipping away at Jacksonville’s lead as Myles Bailey drove in Noah Sheffield with a single, making it a 5-1 game. The Seminoles have hit the ball hard as Gabe Fraser and Hunter Carns flew out to the track for the outs and Sheffield doubled.
Mid 1st: Jacksonville 5, FSU 0
FSU was finally able to get out of the inning as Kevin Mebil struckout a batter. Jacksonville scored five runs on six hits, chasing starter Rhett Vaughn from the game. The Seminoles’ infield defense continued to struggle as Cal Fisher made an error and Eli Putnam was unable to make a tough play.
Florida State is making a pitching change
The Seminoles are making a pitching change as Rhett Vaughn was unable to get out of the first inning. Jacksonville is up 5-0 with just one out in the game. Kevin Mebil is replacing Vaughn, he has a 1.80 ERA in 5.0 innings this season.
FSU Seminoles in trouble early
Jacksonville has come out swinging and is up on FSU in the top of the first inning. While Rhett Vaughn struckout a batter after the leadoff homer, the Dolphins responded with two singles and a double to take a 2-0 lead.
Well, that didn’t take long. Jacksonville leadoff hitter Cade Walter gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead on the first pitch of the game, sending it over the right field fence. It is his seventh homer of the season.

Vaughn will be making his third appearance of the season and his second start. He had a perfect inning against Nebarska in his FSU debut, striking out the side. His first start came against North Florida last week, he allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings, on three hits, and struckout four batters.
Dicks will be making his third start of the season, with his most recent coming against Long Island on Feb. 21. It was his best of the season as he allowed five runs (three earned) over six innings on seven hits and two walks, striking out seven batters.
