Second Harvest of the Big Bend hosts 3rd annual Taste in the Garden to help families facing hunger

  • October 23, 2025

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Second Harvest of the Big Bend is set to host its 3rd annual Taste in the Garden Thursday evening to help families facing hunger.

The annual event will be filled with food, drinks and live music for attendees to enjoy at Tallahassee Nurseries, according to the food bank.

As of Thursday afternoon, the event has raised over $112,000 between donations and tickets purchased for the event, Second Harvest’s website revealed. All proceeds are set to benefit Second Harvest and help them feed families in need.

As the government shutdown continues, many families are expected to face reduced food assistance next week.

James McGowan, chief development officer for Second Harvest, said the organization is monitoring the impacts from the shutdown and has noticed an extreme increase in need for food and assistance.

Additionally, McGowan mentioned that the food bank is struggling because it currently has only 50% of the inventory it had at this time last year.

“Already in the Big Bend area, over 100,000 people are food insecure, so we know with the lack of benefits, that number is gonna rise,” he said. “We’re already strained. We’re already pushing the limits and with this hit, we’re just, we’re not sure how we’re gonna be able to rally to make sure we’re filling everything.”
