Looking back at the March 3, 2019 severe weather outbreak

  • March 4, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – As we enter the spring season, temperatures will warm and flowers will bloom.

It is also a time where Mother Nature’s fury can be on full display.

On March 3, 2019, several tornadoes touched down across the Big Bend and South Georgia.

The strongest twisters were in Cairo and eastern Leon County.

An EF-3 tornado rolled across portions of Leon and Jefferson counties. The tornado had winds of 140 mph. The National Weather Service says this tornado is the second-strongest to affect Leon County since 1945.

In Grady County, an EF-2 tornado damaged buildings and toppled trees in Cairo. The twister had winds of 120 mph. Two people were injured, but no deaths were reported.

Tornadoes were also confirmed in Miller, Wakulla, Decatur and Gadsden counties.

Thankfully, the forecast is quiet this week. However, we are entering the peak of the spring severe weather season.

According to data from Mississippi State University, March and April are typically the busiest months of the year for the National Weather Service in Tallahassee. Both months each recorded more than 100 tornadoes between 1950 and 2015.

It is important to have a severe weather plan, especially in the spring.

Designate where your safe space will be during a tornado warning, pay attention to the forecast when severe weather is mentioned and have multiple ways to get alerts if they are issued.
