Nolan McLean has yet to report to Team USA at the World Baseball Classic after dealing with “vertigo-like symptoms,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters on March 3.
After experiencing the symptoms, including loss of appetite, McLean remained with the Mets rather than joining the U.S. team in Arizona for their exhibition games. Those signs subsided by Saturday, and McLean threw a side session.

The Mets right-hander is scheduled to pitch Wednesday on the back fields and will join Team USA later in the week barring any setbacks.
“I’m definitely feeling better these last couple of days,” McLean told reporters. “I haven’t missed any days of throwing. Kind of grinded it through a little bit last week, still feeling the vertigo symptoms but this week I’ve been feeling really good.”

McLean has made one Grapefruit League start this spring, tossing four scoreless innings with six strikeouts and one hit allowed against the Astros last Thursday.

He will be joining Mets teammate Clay Holmes on the United States’ pitching staff at the WBC.

“I’m going to pitch here tomorrow and make sure I’m feeling good after that and there’s no residual symptoms after that,” McLean said. “I should be able to meet the team out in Houston.”
The United States has exhibition games on Tuesday and Wednesday before they begin pool play against Brazil at 8 p.m. on Friday in Houston. Logan Webb is set to start for the U.S. in their opener before Tarik Skubal takes the ball on Saturday against Great Britain.
According to a report from the New York Post’s Joel Sherman, McLean is on track to return to pitch on March 10 and would be the United States’ likely starter for the championship game on March 17 if they get there.
What is vertigo?
According to the American Medical Association, vertigo is the sensation of spinning or dizziness, which can strike without warning.

It is a more specific sense of dizziness, because it feels like a person is moving when they are not.
Vertigo is often caused by peripheral or ear cases. It can also be caused by migraines.
