The museum announced plans for the “transformative” expansion Wednesday.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Dalí Museum in Downtown St. Pete will begin an exciting transformation this year.
Plans to expand the museum were announced Wednesday.
The changes, which include a new exterior, new gallery environments, a learning center and community spaces, are aimed at better serving both a local audience and tourists.
“We are creating a museum that will stand with the great cultural institutions of the world,” Executive Director Hank Hine said in a statement. “This is a defining moment for our institution and for St. Petersburg.”
The Beck Group, which designed the museum’s iconic glass structure in 2011, will head the 35,000-square-foot expansion.
Crews are expected to break ground this fall, with opening slated for 2028. The museum will remain open throughout construction.
The expansion will cost an estimated $65 million, according to a news release. The Dalí has generated over $1 billion in economic impact since 2011.
