On a rainy night in Oxford, Ohio, a packed Millett Hall watched the history books be rewritten once again. It didn’t come easily, but it came when Miami outlasted Toledo 74-72.

With just 24 seconds remaining, Toledo banged in a layup to cut the lead to just 2 points. Toledo had pulled within a score four other times, and each time the RedHawks found a response to the Rockets surge.

This time, Toledo had the ball with a chance to win the game as the clock expired. For the second time in as many games, the RedHawks needed a last-second savior.

Tuesday, it was Luke Skaljac. With everything on the line, he poked the ball loose and dove on top for a game-sealing steal with 0.1 seconds remaining.

For the first time in 21 years, the Miami RedHawks are regular-season champions of the Mid-American Conference. The Miami RedHawks clinched the conference crown with the victory in the home finale against Toledo.

The win also closes out a perfect home record as Miami won all 17 contests in Millett Hall this season. They’ll take their 31-game home winning streak, tied for the longest in the nation with Duke, into next season.

Miami becomes just the 15th team in men’s Division I history to reach 30-0 in a season. The last team to accomplish that, 2020-21 Gonzaga, reached the national title game.

Read on to see how the Miami RedHawks stayed on top of the college basketball world and cut down the nets with a win over Toledo.

The RedHawks are trying their best to deliver a kill-shot, but Toledo keeps hanging around. An Antwone Woolkfolk 3-pointer nearly tore the roof off Millett Hall just moments ago.

After Toledo once again cut the lead to a single point, Miami turned on the jets. Led by Brant Byers and Peter Suder’s long-range buckets the RedHawks ignited a 10-2 run over three minutes. Byers joined Suder in double-figures: Suder has 17 points, Byers has 11.

The second half is quickly shaping up to be a senior vs. freshman battle. Toledo’s freshman guard Leroy Blyden Jr. has hit four of his last five, but so has Miami senior Peter Suder. No separation yet in the half for the RedHawks.

Peter Suder takes over to stabilize Miami halftime lead over Toledo, 40-35

Heading into the final two minutes of the half, Toledo had all the momentum. Facing down a 12-0 Rockets run, senior Peter Suder decided he would take over for Miami. He scored 6 points over the final two minutes, including a last-second layup to take a 5-point lead into the locker room.

Suder’s scoring burst makes him Miami’s leading scorer with 12 points on 4-6 shooting. He’s the only RedHawk in double figures, with Brant Byers having 8 and Luke Skaljac adding 7. Toledo has been paced by Leroy Blyden Jr., who has 11 points on 5-9 shooting.

Toledo storms back as Miami goes cold | Miami 31, Toledo 30 2:33 1H

The RedHawks have gone ice cold over the past five minutes. Miami hasn’t scored in 5:10, allowing Toledo to go on an extended 12-0 run to cut the lead to just 1 point. Miami’s offense just isn’t moving as efficiently as it usually does, as the RedHawks have resorted to more 1-on-1 action than their norm.

The RedHawks have held steady over the last four minutes of action, but the big source of concern is Luke Skaljac’s health. He currently leads the Redhawks with 7 points, but just walked to the bench holding his left wrist. His right wrist was the one that held him out of the previous game.
