IN PORT SAINT LUCIE. RACHEL PERRY, WPBF 25 NEWS. A NEW E-BIKE POLICY IS EXPECTED TO BE INTRODUCED IN MARTIN COUNTY SCHOOLS. ANGELA ROZIER REACHED OUT TO MARTIN COUNTY OFFICIALS FOR AN UPDATE. WELL, THAT NEW E-BIKE POLICY IS DEFINITELY A WORK IN PROGRESS. AND DEPUTIES HERE IN MARTIN COUNTY ARE SHOWING THEIR SUPPORT. DEPUTIES HAVE SEEN THEIR SHARE OF E-BIKE CRASHES. A LOT OF TIMES IT’S KIDS THAT ARE VIOLATING THE RIGHT OF WAY OF VEHICLES. THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THESE E-BIKES, WITH THEIR INCREASED SPEEDS, HOW THEY CAN BE OPERATED, GOING DOWN THE SIDEWALK, COMING INTO DRIVEWAY ACCESSES, VIOLATING THE RIGHT OF WAY OF OTHER VEHICLES, AND A LOT OF TIMES COLLIDING WITH THESE OTHER VEHICLES AND BECOMING INJURED. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THEY SAY THEY HAVE SEEN AN UPTICK IN THE NUMBER OF CRASHES HERE IN MARTIN COUNTY. NOW, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS IN THE PROCESS OF DRAFTING A NEW E-BIKE POLICY FOR STUDENTS. POSSIBLE RULES DISCUSSED INCLUDE ONLY ALLOWING STUDENTS 16 AND OLDER WHO HAVE A DRIVER’S LICENSE AND A HELMET TO RIDE BIKES. EBIKES ON CAMPUSES COULD ALSO BE LIMITED TO TWO MILES PER HOUR OR LESS. OFFICIALS WITH THE MARTIN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAY THEY ARE IN FAVOR OF THESE RESTRICTIONS. ULTIMATELY, IT’S OUR GOAL AT THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN.
