GULF COUNTY, FL (Amazing America) — Uncrowded and unspoiled is the way some describe Gulf County, Florida. Its award-winning beaches are among the least crowded white sands in the Sunshine State, and it’s known for that small-town, laid-back vibe.

Gulf County, especially Port St. Joe, is known as the Scallop Capital of Florida, but it is its shrimp that is the star attraction at one local dine-in spot.

Amazing America’s Katherine Page, a Gulf Coast native, gets a taste of home.

Sometimes the best things indeed come in the simplest packages. That’s the inspiration behind Skully’s Low Country Boil. The bayside spot is the passion project of Paul and Aleshia Whitlow. Paul knows his way around a restaurant. He knew that a simple menu using fresh ingredients could still bring the wow factor. His low-country boil recipe isn’t a secret: Fresh Gulf shrimp, quality sausage, fresh corn, and potatoes are boiled with seasonings to perfection.

Besides a great meal, the Whitlows serve true Southern hospitality that invites you to pull up a chair and chat awhile. In fact, some regular customers consider themselves part of the family business. They’ve jumped in to take orders when the bayside shack is bustling.

Others come back to perform their own music and jam with Paul, who was a touring musician for years. The laid-back attitude allows visitors to enjoy the low-key relaxation and charm of Florida’s Gulf Coast.
